I added 68 songs to my ‘Liked Songs’ playlist on Spotify in 2024. That may not sound a lot, but this list only receives my absolute top-tier tune choices.
The playlist has a total of 613 tracks dating back over a decade, so I’ve increased this list by about 12% this year (a decent year in terms of numbers – aiming to do better in 2025).
Here are my top 10 songs (in reverse order of the date added) that I’ve added to my Liked Songs playlist in 2024. These aren’t necessarily new songs; instead, they are tracks I recently discovered or now consider worthy of inclusion.
Elusive Butterfly – Marc Almond
Added 31st December 2024
This was the final addition to my playlist which I added on New Year’s Eve. Marc Almond is the lead singer of Soft Cell. Marc performed this track on Jools Holland’s Hootenanny, the annual NYE event show on BBC2.
I’ve not listened to any of his work before this and only know Soft Cell by name. This live track blew my mind on NYE – will be filling up my ears with Marc Almond and Soft Cell’s back catalogue in 2025.
Fortune Teller – Jonathan Peyton
Added 12th November 2024
In September I starting adding songs I found on Instagram (mainly via ads) to a playlist I titled ‘Social Sounds’. Whenever I enjoyed a song a 7/10 or more – it went on the list.
Fortune Teller is my favourite track from Instagram since the mini project began and could be contender for song of the year.
I hope Jonathan Peyton releases a studio recording of this track in 2025.
El Capitan – Bright Eyes
20th September 2024
Lead singer Conor Oberst is my favourite artist of all time and has been since I was 16 (more than two decades now).
Bright Eyes’ last two albums have failed to pull me in as much as their earlier releases but they still bang (just not quite as much) – El Capitan is my favourite track from the new album (Five Dice, All Threes).
Revelator – Phosphorescent
Added 28th August 2024
Another album that I was desperately waiting for in 2024 was Revelator. The title track gets my pick – a true beauty of a song.
I even went to see Matthew Houck (Phosphorescent) at the KOKO in Camden with my friend Sam – a dreamy experience (although we did spend too long in the pub and missed a few songs at the start 😭).
SHITHOUSE – BIG SPECIAL
Added 10th July 2024
I got back from Glastonbury in July and immediately found this song. BIG SPECIAL played on the Leftfield stage and after discovering this track, I was devastated I missed them! Quite different from my other tracks.
Gives me IDLES and The Streets vibes.
Flowers By The Roadside – The Felice Brothers
Added 1st June 2024
I managed to include three songs with the word ‘butterfly’ into my Liked Songs this year. Maybe I need to get a butterfly tattoo?!? 🦋
The Felice Brothers are my current favourite band – I saw them at the Electric Ballroom in 2024, my first ever solo-gig.
Also, shoutout to the track Strawberry Blonde which was released on Bandcamp at the end of 2023 – which I added my playlist on 29th January.
Like Lovers Do – Elias Rønnenfelt
Added 31st May 2024
This one came via Discover Weekly on Spotify. I’m pretty sure it was Elias’s first release. Banger – nothing else to say.
Forever Now – The Avett Brothers
Added 2rd May 2024
The Avett Brothers have been one of those bands that I know I will love if I just dedicate a bit more time to them. I’ve added 4 of their tracks on my Like Songs playlist since 2023, so I’m getting there.
Note to self for 2025 – listen to The Avett Brothers more.
Forever Now will make you cry if you aren’t carful.
Turn The Lights Back On – Billy Joel
Added 21st February 2024
Billy Joel wrote a new song, Billy Joel wrote a new song, BILLY f’ing JOEL wrote a new song and it is 10/10 good. 🤯
The story of how the track came about is great. Watch him explain on The Howard Stern Show.
Runner Up – Al Olender
Added 17th February 2024
Another Discover Weekly special. Do you remember when iTunes used to keep track of play counts – that was nice! I’d imagine this would be one of my most listened to tracks of 2024.
Letting Go – Angie McMahon
Added 25th January 2024
Ok, I need to make this list eleven long – I’m writing this listening to all my 2024 tracks and ‘Letting Go’ by Angie McMahon has just come on – how could I miss that one off!
That’s it! I enjoyed the simplicity of this process, allowing myself to choose from just one playlist.
Mission for 2025 is to add 100+ new songs to the list. ✌️
